Baguazhang first became famous when Dong Hai-chuan taught the art in Beijing in the 1860s. Many of those who came to train
with him were already accomplished martial artists. Dong taught them principles for practice, fighting strategy and tactics,
circular movement and most importantly, the principles of change. The many varieties of Ba gua developed gradually with forms being developed or added to from applications.

Lou De Xiu appeared on the BBC series, The Way Of The Warrior, in 1985. For many it was the first time that bagua was demonstrated
in the west. Then Luo was a top student of Hung I-hsing's Tang Shou Tao. Lou was introduced to Hung's school around 1970. Lou initially focused on Hsing Yi Chuan for fighting in full contact competition from 1972 to 1975. Lou knew that his teacher, Hung, along with his two brothers had learned bagua from Chang Chun-feng, a student of GaoYi Sheng. Lou continued to make enquiries and while on national service he learned with Liu Ch'ien, a student of Sun His-Kun. On leaving
national service Lou continued to train and teach bagua.
